Dr. Jekyll Mr. London

We rescued London on June 28, 2009 (5 weeks ago on Sunday) from the local SPCA. Our then 9 month old "puppy" spent nearly 2 months in the pound, we knew we might have some issues. He is no not so good with social skills when it comes to other dogs, all 70 pounds of him flails and jumps like a fish out of water and pulls you left to right, he is scared of umbrellas, traffic, and walking in the dark... We have had to throw out a portion of our flooring from the "accidents" for the first 2 weeks we owned him, and a week and a half ago when he met my mother he jumped on the couch and peed because he was jealous when we hugged each other. All of the above, we can work on...
The 4 pairs of ruined shoes, 2 pairs of underwear, 1 bra, 3 pairs of pants 1 shirt, 1 sweater, 2 important pieces of mail, our coffee table and pretty much our whole livingroom couch (along with countless other household items, garbage etc) is a little harder to deal with. I come home every day for 30 mins at lunch, we practice leaving the house for short periods of time, Ignoring him for 10 mins when we come home and before we leave and distancing ourselves during the day when we are home. We keep clearing the area he is in when we are gone and he still finds stuff to get at somehow, and doors sometimes myteriously open. We don't get angry or scold when get home to find he has destroyed something, we have bought a billion toys, kongs and bones.... But we just do not know how to correct a behaviour that only happens when we are not home, he never chews or pays attention to anything unacceptable in our presence! He just could be Canada's naughtiest dog.....
