Labradorious Enthusiasticus Stupidicus (Gooficus)

Submitted by: Sandy Burke

Casey is a good dog. At least, that’s what I keep telling myself. She is a 6 month old yellow lab who is full of love and energy but she definitely lacks in the manners department. I was completely impressed when she learned the “sit” command at 8 weeks of age. To date, that’s the only command she’s learned and now, she only does it when she feels like it. My veterinarian joked that the lab’s Latin name is: Labradorius Enthusiasticus Stupidicus (with Gooficus to be added on at about 6 month of age), and he wasn’t too far off the mark. In the 5 short months that we’ve had her, Casey has chewed the deck, torn through the screen door, gotten into the garbage, she barks at absolutely nothing (& everything!), scratched a hole in the wall, taken food off of the table (with the most recent incident being that she helped herself to an entire birthday cake that was sitting on the kitchen table!). I have no problem with the Enthusiasticus part of her genetic background but I do believe that we can work on the Stupidicus. To say the least, I’m not looking forward to the Gooficus stage. Please help!
